As a keen observer of industry trends, my attention was drawn to recent media articles about the potential boom in shipping profits up to US$300 billion over 2021 and 2022.The news is very welcome as we continue our journey through the pandemic tunnel. However, few mention that contributory factors and serious medium to long-term supply chain bottlenecks appear to have shifted onto landside factors, including equipment shortages and warehousing.
The current global issues with air cargo\shipping containers and prices that exceed the profitability of many consumer goods, creates the next great opportunities to
rethink the way we get our goods delivered either by S&OP, Agile or JIT (Just In Time).

For more than a year, the Covid-19 pandemic has raged on and continues to create significant challenges for a variety of business sectors. As being demonstrated in the likes of India, Vietnam and United Kingdom in recent weeks, countries around
the world struggle with balancing multiple waves of infections and new variations with their plans to open economies to some form of normal.
Since commencing operations in 1999, one of the most common questions we’ve been asked by thousands of candidates we have worked with and placed is, “How can I best prepare for the job interview?”
The fact is, many talented, qualified candidates, at all levels, are poorly prepared for job interviews and fail to progress past stage 1 of the assessment process, let alone secure the role they apply for because they are not well prepared for the initial interview.

Last week’s announcement by the UAE that it plans to introduce enhanced strategies and investments to increase the manufacturing sector’s contribution to 300 billion dirhams (US$81.68bn) from the existing 133 billion dirhams (US$36.22bn) is a bold and positive move that will boost the economy at a time when businesses are seeking confidence. Logistics jobs being axed in their thousands – but there will be opportunities.
Do you remember selecting two-day shipping on Amazon and having it arrive the next day? No one gave it a second thought. In fact, most of us probably just said “wow, Amazon is quick!” whilst opening our highly anticipated packages. Compare that feeling to how you felt when in the peak pandemic period of April and May 2020, trying to order something and getting a shipment date of ten to fourteen days later. Suddenly, we were frustrated by the delay; we started blaming eCommerce sites when really the main culprit was the loss of air cargo capacity in the skies.
Almost overnight, the game has changed for leaders and businesses. Pre-pandemic, we seemed to be in a relatively stable world where many factors were known. Growth was relatively predictable and achieving success for some was the pursuit of perfection. Our ships were merrily sailing across the oceans delivering “Made in China” products to consumers at an increasing rate and profit.
Facing up to an unprecedented global pandemic meant overcoming national lockdowns, the closing of borders, grounding of passenger airlines and interruptions to supply chains. Regardless of political power, size or stage of development, economies across the world have felt the pain of COVID-19 and for many it will take months and possibly years to recover.
Times are tough and this pandemic has not only changed the way we go about our daily lives, but the way in which we work.
